Why did he do this?....?

So my guy friend/crush called me. We both like eachother. He called me then kept asking if it was me or not and i said yes..then he was like nevermind then like hung up. I kind of thought that was rude. I was wondering why he would call me then say nevermind. I was wondering if I should call again one day but I didn't want that to make me look desperate. If he called me why didn't he say what he has to say? Why would he say nevermind and hang up? (Btw, he may be very little shy but he's a people person kind of so this has never happened before.)
